Portugal poll: The other Lisbon vote

The poll gives the Socialists 36%-40% and the main opposition party, the centre-right Social Democrats, 25%-29%.

The survey showed three smaller parties also secured parliamentary seats in today’s vote, polling between 7-12% each.

The Socialists proposed a big-spending stimulus package to drive the country out of an economic crisis which has brought the highest jobless rate in over 20 years.

Socialist leader and prime minister Jose Socrates has also vowed to stick with a social and economic reform programme that has antagonised many, especially trade unions. The Social Democratic Party wants to facilitate more private enterprise, including through tax breaks.
