Funeral held for girl, 4, killed after father dropped TV

Four-year-old Emily Hughes died on Christmas Day after a tragic accident at the family home on Christmas Eve.

Robert Hughes was carrying the family’s old widescreen set downstairs into the children’s play room when it slipped from his grip and pinned Emily down.

He had not known she was playing at the foot of the stairs and did not see her beneath him.

Mr Hughes and his wife, Louise, tried to resuscitate her until paramedics arrived in the early evening.

She was certified dead at 10.20pm on Christmas Day.

An inquest heard she died from “a catastrophic brain injury”.

Yesterday, Mr Hughes, his wife and brother and sisters were joined by hundreds of mourners at St Tudfil Church near the family home in Coedpoeth, near Wrexham.

The congregation heard from Major Gill Stacey, of the Salvation Army, that Emily brought sunshine into people’s lives.

Dolly Parton’s Jolene — one of the little girl’s favourite songs — was played and the 300 mourners left church carrying pink balloons.

Emily was the youngest of four children, and went to Penygelli School and to the Salvation Army Sunday School in Coedpoeth, which family members have attended for many years.

Her father is a design engineer and her mother a youth worker.
