Claim couple dumped twins of the ‘wrong sex’

A BRITISH couple alleged to have dumped their twin baby girls after travelling to India for IVF treatment are continuing to visit them in hospital, an NHS spokesman insisted last night.

The parents are “attentive to their needs”, despite a report that the girls were abandoned at Wolverhampton hospital because of their sex, NHS West Midlands said.

A spokesman said: “Twin girls were born at New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton, earlier this month by Caesarean section.

“Shortly after birth, the babies were transferred to a unit in Birmingham closer to where their parents live.

“The parents are visiting their daughters whilst they are being cared for in hospital and they are attentive to their needs.

“For patient confidentiality reasons, the identity of the family and the babies are not being disclosed. The identity of the hospital [in Birmingham] is not being disclosed.

“We are not aware of a referral to social services,” the spokesman added.

Birmingham City Council also confirmed yesterday there had been no referral to social services.

It was earlier reported that the couple had dumped their newborn twins when they found out they were girls.

The Sun newspaper claimed the mother, 59, and father, 72, had travelled to India for fertility treatment that would not have been allowed in Britain because of their age.

The parents, who were born in India but are British citizens living in Birmingham, reportedly told doctors they did not want the “wrong sex” babies immediately after the children were born.

The newspaper said the husband then asked medics how long it would be before his wife was fit enough to fly back to India for more IVF treatment in the hope of getting a boy and continuing the family name.
