Radical Muslim cleric to fight attempts to kick him out of Britain

LAWYERS for radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza have confirmed they have lodged an appeal against attempts to kick him out of Britain.

The one-eyed, hook-handed preacher was served with papers signed by Home Secretary David Blunkett on April 5, telling him the government intended to use the new Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act.

The law allows a person who acts against Britain’s interests to be stripped of British citizenship. In a statement late on Thursday, his solicitors, Arani & Co, said: “We confirm that an appeal has been lodged on behalf of our above named client.

“We confirm that we are unable to comment further on this matter. This is now going to be a matter for the courts to adjudicate upon.”

The measures taken by the government could pave the way for Hamza’s extradition to his native Egypt.

The Gulf state of Yemen has renewed attempts to extradite Hamza to face charges of terrorism. Earlier this week, Hamza’s lawyers claimed evidence which may be used against him in American courts was “tainted”.

James Ujaama, an American Muslim who admits aiding the Taliban, has agreed to help federal prosecutors investigate Hamza. A US official said this could lead to a request for Hamza’s extradition from Britain to the US.

But the cleric has vowed to fight all attempts to deport him from Britain. He sparked controversy over his comments attacking Britain, the US and Jews. He also caused outrage when he called the 9/11 atrocity a “punishment from Allah”.
