Teacher who seduced student free
Mary Kay Letourneau, aged 42, was released from Washington Corrections Centre for Women near Gig Harbor, Washington, early yesterday.
Letourneau and her now 21-year-old former lover, Vili Fualaau, plan to challenge a court order that bars her from contacting him, a friend said.
Her relationship with Fualaau began in 1996 when she was a 34-year-old married mother of four and he was her 12-year-old student at Shorewood Elementary School in Burien, Washington.
Yesterday, the former teacher said that after her time in prison she wants to focus on being a mother - not reuniting with Fualaau.
At the same time, she said she would have another baby with him. "If we are so blessed to continue a relationship and if that's what he wants, for him I would."
When asked if she thought that after all these years she and Fualaau may have drifted apart, she smiled and said, "no". When asked if she regrets what she did, she replied, "Knowing what we had, I should have waited."
And she started to cry when she talked about the impact on her children, saying: "I can't touch the pain my children have gone through."
Letourneau said her main goal now is reunification with her whole family, including her mother. She said she is in the "healing process" with all six children - the four she had with her ex-husband Steve Letourneau, and the girls she had with Fualaau.
Audrey, seven, and Georgia, almost six, are being raised by Fualaau's mother. Fualaau, now 21, has asked a judge to lift a no-contact order so he and Letourneau can discuss the girls.
Earlier this week, the New York Post reported Letourneau teased and taunted her schoolboy lover from behind bars, sending letters to him and his family boasting of a steamy sex romp with a prison guard and flirtations with lesbian inmates.
Some of the more than three dozen letters were smuggled out of the Washington Corrections Centre for Women in baby bottles.
The former teacher, 42, also managed to sneak out at least five audio tapes to Fualaau.
The letters and tapes, said the Post, are alternately tender and violent, romantic and hateful.
As a registered Level 3 sex offender, Letourneau will be subject to routine polygraphs and drug testing upon her release.
She's forbidden from making any contact with Fualaau and from dating any man with minor children. Violating any of these conditions could send her back to prison.
The following are passages from her letters.
:
"I'm one of those that needs to be protected from the flaming gays here - there (sic) all over me - testing me ... girls are always fighting over each other. There's bets on who's gonna 'turn me out'."
:
"I fell into some crazy spell here, and I let this guy totally come on to me. I let him even touch me ... more happened that you don't need to hear about.
"He's 23-years-old, funny and smart and wild and strong. I loved the way he talked about my body and all of me ... he's a f**king sexaholic."
:
"I just want to be out and with you - and left alone. To go to concerts by the sea again and hold my babies and lay in the sun ... and hear the quiet of the night and ... make love to that one person."
:
"F**K HIM, if he doesn't have more class than that ... I don't expect him to forget that he has a penis (he needs to remind her it's mine) but there are other ways ... he may as well spit in his babies' faces - and tell them 'Mommy's dead' too."
:
"Today I heard you weren't going to court tomorrow. Why not? Did you give up? ... F**k you. Some f**king warrior. I'm fighting ... until I f**king die."
Signing off another letter, she wrote: "I LOVE YOU ... Big loves Big kisses Big f**ks Big sounds Big squeeze."
