Channel 4 gets set for sex, drugs and a right royal romp
The Queen’s Sister, which is set for broadcast in the autumn, is billed by Channel 4 as a “witty and irreverent royal romp”.
Some of the scenes, starring newcomer Lucy Cohu as the princess, are bound to shock.
The Queen’s Sister is one of two big dramas commissioned by Channel 4 for the autumn.
The other is a two-part film about the life of Elizabeth I with Helen Mirren as the Virgin Queen.
Channel 4’s director of television Kevin Lygo said: “I don’t know if Her Majesty will be watching, but we could send her a DVD.
“I think some people will find it quite arresting and challenging. It’s factually accurate and it’s a racy romp.”
The drama shows Margaret giving oral sex and in a lesbian kiss.
In another scene it shows her smoking “a strange cigarette” at a party.
Mr Lygo said the drama captures Margaret “in the late Fifties and early Sixties when she was absolutely the most glamorous public female figure in a Diana-like way in her own era and then it all went a bit wrong.”
Channel 4’s senior commissioning editor for drama, said the Princess Margaret biopic was based on interviews as well as research from existing sources.
He said: “It’s quite affectionate, she is our heroine and it wasn’t intended as an expose.”
