Power restored to 40,000 storm hit homes

While the storms in Britain claimed the lives of six people, the bad weather did not cause any physical injuries when it swept through this country.

The vast majority of the 40,000 homes in Ireland that experienced power cuts had their electricity supplies restored last night. The greater Dublin area and the south east coast were the worst affected.

Most of the problems were caused by fallen trees and branches hitting power lines. The ESB had been prepared for the storm and had crews out since before dawn yesterday carrying out repair work. Most cross-channel ferry sailings were cancelled yesterday, but some services resumed last night.

While the storm had moved out to sea and across to Britain by lunchtime yesterday the effects continued to be felt.

The storm force winds that lasted most of yesterday over London's Stansted airport, seriously disrupted Ryanair's schedule. Three of the airline's 44 aircraft - two in Dublin and one in Stansted, also suffered damage caused by loose ground equipment. Because of the unsafe weather conditions the airline cancelled 16 of their 300 scheduled Europe flights Crosswinds at Shannon Airport caused the diversion of all incoming transatlantic flights to Dublin, while a number of other flights were delayed, particularly from Britain No Aer Lingus flights were cancelled, but operations were running n Dublin, the Dart service between Malahide and Howth Junction was suspended yesterday when a tree damaged overhead lines at Malahide. However, the service was restored by lunchtime. A tree that fell on the railine near Mallow, Co Cork, caused a two-hour delay to yesterday morning's 8.20am service from Cork to Dublin. Trees also fell onto the line between Portarlington and Kildare causing an hour's delay in the 8.35am service from Galway to Dublin.

Most roads that were blocked by fallen trees were cleared by lunchtime.
