Olivier Giroud, 40, says it's likely he will retire at end of season

His return to France was treated with great fanfare and even now, he is often applauded by opposition fans

Olivier Giroud has indicated that the current campaign is likely to be his final season as a professional footballer.

The Lille striker turns 40 on Wednesday and told L’Equipe that he is enjoying each match as he approaches the end of his career.

“I think this is probably my last season. That is why I am enjoying every moment,” said Giroud.

Giroud has made six appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring once.

Giroud has had quite the career. It was during Montpellier HSC's shock title-winning season that he broke through before making the move to Arsenal. After six years at the Emirates Stadium, he made the switch across the capital to join Chelsea, whilst he has also played for the likes of AC Milan, Los Angeles FC. He currently plays for LOSC. 

His return to France was treated with great fanfare, and even now, over a year after his return to L'Héxagone, he is often applauded by opposition fans.

Before retiring, he will aim to add to his club record of 303 goals in 806 matches. The former France international scored 57 goals in 137 appearances for his country.

Giroud joined Lille on a free transfer from Los Angeles in the summer before last. His contract has since been extended until the end of the current season.
