Dundalk go third with come-from-behind win over Bohs

Ten-man Dundalk moved up to third in the league with an impressive come-from-behind win at Dalymount Park.

Cian Byrne’s header, after five minutes, looked to have set Bohs on their way, but much like the week before at Celtic Park, an early goal was as good as it got in Phibsborough.

The home side started like a team possessed, clipping the post within the first minute through the now free agent Harry Vaughan on the stretch before Byrne powered home. But instead of building on their impressive opening, it was the visitors who came to life.

Following a big penalty claim on Harry Vaughan, the hosts were hit with a lightning-quick counterattack when Eoin Kenny beat four players in his own half before releasing Ronan Teehan with a clever reverse pass.

The 21-year-old kept his composure to square to Mullen, whose powerful low strike deflected past the helpless Paul Girard Walters.

Just after the restart, Pat Hickey’s slack back pass allowed Mullen to nip in and steal possession.

The razor-sharp Scotsman poked the ball past the onrushing Walters but Hickey recovered well to atone for his error, clearing off the line at the crucial moment.

It was the visitors again who went closest to doubling their tally, again gifted by more sloppy play at the back.

This time Rooney took one too many touches in his own box with the ball eventually falling to Mullen who rattled the crossbar.

Clearly unhappy, Alan Reynolds made a swift triple substitution in a bid to liven his side up but it was the impressive visitors who completed the turnaround through an incredible turn and finish from Kenny.

Substitute McDaid received two yellows in his 14-minute cameo to force a nervy ending but the Lilywhites hung on as chants of “We want Rennie out” greeted the final whistle.
