Munster's hopes of luring All Black tighthead prop Tyrel Lomax away from the Hurricanes have been dashed by the news that he has re-signed with New Zealand rugby until the end of 2029.
Munster CEO Ian Flanagan confirmed last month that the province had "tabled an offer" for the 48-cap international who was due to come available in 2027, but will now have to look elsewhere if they are to find that statement Non-Irish Qualified tighthead signing - something Flanagan noted was a "key focus" in helping head coach Clayton McMillan build his squad.
Although they have secured the services of Jack Aungier from Connacht, Munster look very shy of options at tighthead, with John Ryan retiring and short-term signing Michael Ala'alatoa due to depart, as it stands.
Samoan prop Ala'alatoa has been an ever-present since his arrival from Clermont, with Ireland international Oli Jager featuring infrequently as he struggled with a succession of concussions, while knee trouble has meant Roman Salanoa has not played for the Munster first-team since 2023.
Former Young Munster man Conor Bartley remains in the province's ranks, as does young Ronan Foxe, who will move up from the academy on a two-year contract next season.
“I’m really excited to extend my time with the All Blacks, Hurricanes and Tasman Rugby through to the end of 2029,” Lomax said upon signing his new deal.
“My family and I love being based here and I still have a lot to contribute and achieve. Rugby has played a huge part in my life and the opportunity to continue representing these teams means a lot to me.
“The next few years are incredibly exciting too. We’ve got a Rugby World Cup coming up and a British and Irish Lions tour in 2029.
"Those are opportunities every rugby player wants to be part of and having the chance to keep building towards those campaigns and wear the black jersey was a huge factor in my decision.
“I’m grateful for the support I’ve received throughout my career and can’t wait to continue chasing success with this group over the next few years.”
