Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal has been ruled out for the remainder of the LaLiga season with a hamstring injury but is expected to be fit for the World Cup.

The 18-year-old Spain international was taken off in Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Celta Vigo moments after scoring a penalty late in the first half.

“Tests carried out have confirmed that first-team player Lamine Yamal has a hamstring injury in his left leg (biceps femoris muscle),” said a statement from Barcelona.

“The player will follow a conservative treatment plan. Lamine Yamal will miss the remainder of the season and he is expected to be available for the World Cup.” Barcelona still have six league matches remaining but hold a nine-point advantage over arch-rivals Real Madrid in second place.

Spain’s World Cup squad are set to join up on May 30, with the final player list submitted to FIFA on June 1 ahead of their opening match against minnows Cape Verde on June 15.
