John Egan has completed his transfer deadline day move to Hull City from Burnley for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of €260,000.

The Cork native has made just one start for the Clarets in the Championship this season under manager Scott Parker, whose side have conceded just nine goals in 30 games with their current centre-back pairing of Maxime Estève and CJ Egan-Riley.

The 32-year-old joined Burnley after being released by Sheffield United last summer following a campaign which was cut short due to a serious Achilles tendon injury.

The former Republic of Ireland captain, who has won 36 caps for the Boys in Green, was looking to make the move in order to play more games and in a bid to potentially return to the Irish set-up for the first time since the 2-1 loss to the Netherlands in October 2023.

Having now signed for the Tigers, Egan could form an all Cork partnership with Sean McLoughlin in the heart of their defence.

“I’m delighted. I’d known about the interest for a couple of weeks but wasn’t sure if it was going to happen. Last night, I got a call and I made my way over this morning," Egan told the club's official website.

“The club has made some really good signings in January. It’s a really good squad, a very good manager; it just needs to drive up the league now.

“The manager has steadied things and the team plays some good football, high intensity, on the front foot. They’re the type of teams you want to play in.

“I’ve played a lot of games in this division, managed to get promoted twice. Every game is really hard and the main thing is about being consistent. Having consistent standards in training leads to consistent performances on a matchday.

“I’m looking forward to the future, putting on the black and amber, being a Hull City player. I’ll give it my all, and hopefully, we can achieve success together.”

The Tigers are currently 21st in the Championship table, just two points ahead of Derby County and Luton Town in the relegation places and four points clear of bottom club Plymouth Argyle.
