Drogheda run riot in mauling of sorry Sligo Rovers

This result is many things to Drogheda United. Their biggest ever Premier Division home win, it also equals a club record victory in the top-flight. More than that, perhaps, it swings momentum wholly in Drogheda’s favour as the season enters its final straight.
Since Douglas James-Taylor equalised against Shamrock Rovers 12 days ago, United have now scored 16 goals without reply in league and cup competition. John Russell’s team arrived at Weavers Park as the league’s in-form team.
United may have a reasonable claim to that mantel now. They tore Sligo Rovers apart. The visitors at no point looked particularly capable of laying a glove on a team that began the evening propping up the table.
There seems to be no stopping Drogheda these days. Just four minutes had elapsed when James-Taylor's smart finish had them in front. Minutes late. Andrew Quinn scored at the near post a Sligo failed badly to deal with a corner.
Frantz Pierrot scored goals three and four – the first with a fine header and for the second, he converted a rebound after Ed McGinty had saved a header from Darragh Markey’s cross. The midfielder’s 60-yard run made the goal.
Conor Kane, the best player on the pitch, scored the fifth with a drilled finish low to McGinty’s left. Elicha Ahui managed to hook the ball over the line for six and in injury time, Adam Foley fired in after Kanes surging run. Drogheda ran riot and Sligo simply couldn’t keep up.
