Penalties were required for First Division Treaty United to emerge victorious over Leinster Senior League outfit, Kilbarrack United, in an underwhelming cup tie on Shannonside. Teenage keeper Mike Dike was the hometown hero, saving two penalties.
Treaty did dominate proceedings, but failed to unlock a well organised Dublin outfit.
There were bright sparks from home debutant Lee J Lynch but Tommy Barrett’s men continued their bluntness in attack. Calling upon regulars Lee Devitt and Stephen Chirstopher in a drab second-half, the fitness of the hosts eventually won through.
Enda Curran had the game's first chance, combining with Lee-J Lynch before drawing a decent save from new signing Evan Whelan on 36 minutes. Darren Nwankwo failed to connect with a back post header soon after.
The visitors had a glorious opening on 70 minutes when Jamie Hamilton looked to have profited from a defensive lapse by the Limerick side. Hamilton’s chipped effort from just inside the area spun agonisingly wide to the frustration of Ross Carrig’s men.
Sub Mick Malone could have stolen the win for the north Dubliners, but skewed wide in stoppage time.
Attempts from Christopher, Leon Kirrane and Trpimir Vrljicak were off target during a slightly better extra-time, but Kilbarrack stood firm. Malone had their best chance but in the end spot kicks were required.
17-year-old Dike denied Mark Townley and Jimmy McHugh while Curran, Lee-J Lynch, Chistopher and Oisin O’Reilly all slotted home for the winners.
