During the first tournament I covered fully as a journalist — the World Cup in France in 1998 — a big beast of the UK media approached the information desk in the media centre on a slow afternoon.

One of the endlessly helpful and patient volunteers asked him how she could be of use. “Head of Press, please,” he replied with a curtness that made it clear he could not be assisted by anyone of a lower rank.
