JAMIE Carragher once explained the task of managing Liverpool by saying that the man who walked in the door was never the same man who left some years later.

By the end of their time in charge, men like Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez had been fundamentally altered by the job. Carragher saw them diminish in real time. They became paranoid, shrunken and drained.
