Shamrock Rovers have announced the signing of Josh Honohan from Cork City ahead of the 2024 season.

The versatile 22-year-old will join up with the Dublin side in December. His move from Cork City was an expected one following their relegation from the Premier Division.

Honohan joined Cork City's academy from Carrigaline United in 2018. He played with the U17s and U19s before signing his first professional contract in August 2019.

He made his first appearance off the bench for Premier Division fixtures against Sligo Rovers and Waterford before making his senior debut against the Blues at Turner's Cross in September 2019.

Honohan played just one game for the first team in 2020 in City's 3-2 victory over Midleton in the semi-finals of the Munster Senior Cup at Bishopstown.

Honohan was called up to the Republic of Ireland's U21s in October 2021. A month later he signed a new deal with City scoring two goals in 17 appearances in the 2022 First Division title winning season.

Last year he started 32 of City's 36 league games where they ultimately lost in the relegation play-off to Waterford.

Rovers' head coach Stephen Bradley is looking forward to seeing what Honohan brings to the squad.

“We’ve watched Josh for some time and we’ve really liked him, monitored him for a number of months and we started conversations a while back.

"Josh is one who fits our profile of what we’re looking for, we think he has a really high ceiling and we feel that we can help him reach that.

"He’s got really good attributes, we feel he can only improve by coming to Rovers. So we’ll help him and he’ll help us.

"Josh can play anywhere, he’s a sort of Liam Scales type player in that he can play wing back or centre back. He just plays the game, he can use both feet naturally which helps as well.

"So, he’s very comfortable playing as wing back or centre back. We’ll mould him into what we see as his best position as time goes. But as I say, Josh is one we’ve liked for quite some time.”
