VIDEO: Louis Van Gaal: ‘Fantastic’ Wayne Rooney is ‘an example for the whole team’
In the build up to tonight’s Champions League match against CSKA Moscow, the Manchester United manager has come out in strong defence of his captain Wayne Rooney.
Rooney has been in poor form so far this season, scoring just two Premier League goals in ten appearances, but Louis van Gaal described him as a “fantastic player”.
He suggested the media are unfairly accusing the team of being unable to score, after three games without a goal.
“No, it is not true, it is only a moment in a process,” Van Gaal said last night at a press conference.
He continued: “Wayne Rooney is a fantastic player So the expectation is much higher than another player in another club.”
Van Gaal suggested Rooney’s importance to the club went beyond that of other team members.
“Rooney is more than only scoring goals. He is our captain, but also an example for the whole team,” he explained.
“He has more credit than any other player.”
