The captain of South Africa’s national football team has been shot dead during an attempted robbery at a friend’s house, police said.

Goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was killed at around 8pm last night after two gunmen entered the property in Vosloorus township near Johannesburg while an accomplice waited outside.
