Wales charged by UEFA over pitch invasion

UEFA has started disciplinary proceedings against the Football Association of Wales for the pitch invasion following Gareth Bale’s late winner against Andorra on Tuesday night.

Bale’s free-kick strike was greeted with Wales fans racing onto the pitch to celebrate the decisive goal in Wales’ 2-1 Euro 2016 qualifying victory.

“Disciplinary proceedings have been opened following the European Qualifier Group B match between Andorra and Wales (1-2) played on Tuesday 9 September in Andorra,” read the UEFA statement.

The statement continued: ``Football Association of Wales: Field invasion by supporters (Art.16.2a DR) The case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on 16 October 2014.''

The FAW said it is not commenting on the investigation.

Under article six of UEFA’s disciplinary regulations, there are a wide-range of punishments available include a warning, a fine and a points deduction.

Crowd problems broke out after the Real Madrid forward completed a Welsh turnaround in the 81st minute.

The visitors went behind when Ildefons Lima scored a penalty – Andorra’s first goal in a competitive fixture since 2010 – but Bale equalised.

Wales’ next two Euro 2016 qualifiers are both at home in October, against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Cyprus.

Andorra did not escape action either, with the Andorran Football Federation facing action for exceeding five yellow cards in Tuesday’s match.
