I’m ‘desperate to compensate’ for poor season writes Moyes in open letter to fans

Manchester United manager David Moyes has written an open letter to the club’s fans in which he has said he is desperate to compensate for their poor season.

The under-fire Scot has endured a largely torrid time since taking over from Alex Ferguson having been dumped out of the FA Cup and Carling Cup by Swansea and Sunderland respectively.

United are sitting 12 points adrift of fourth place in the Premier League and need to overturn a two goal first-leg deficit against Olympiakos to remain in the Champions League.

In the ‘12th Man’ quarterly magazine sent to season ticket holders, Moyes sought continued patience from the Manchester United faithful and promised to build a successful team if given the time.

“While I knew that this job would be challenging when I took it on, the difficult season we have experienced was not something that I had envisaged, which I’m sure is the case for you supporters – and my players, staff and I am desperate to compensate for that,” he wrote.

“Over the years you have seen great winning sides here and, in time, I have absolutely no doubt that we will see great winning sides here again,” he added.

Moyes thanked the fans for their continued support and loyalty, describing the travelling away-day fans as the best in country.

“You are accustomed to seeing a successful Manchester United and the backing you have given the players and I throughout the season has been incredible.

“Away from home the travelling fans have remained the best in the country, while at Old Trafford your unwavering faith has been noticeable and hugely welcomed,” Moyes wrote.

While some will welcome Moyes’s attempted appeasement of the fans, others will no doubt see it as a sign of weakness in stark contrast to the notoriously iron-cast belief of their former manager.
