Shola and Sammy Ameobi started a Barclays Premier League game together for the first time as Newcastle attempted to end a run of two successive derby defeats by Sunderland.

Striker Shola was included in place of the suspended Loic Remy in the only change to the side which drew 0-0 at Norwich in midweek.

Liam Bridcutt was handed a Sunderland debut by Gus Poyet barely 24 hours after his arrival from Brighton, as he replaced Sebastian Larsson.
