A brace from teenager Gary Shanahan saw Dundalk come from behind to beat Longford Town 2-1 at Flancare Park and advance to the last eight of the EA Sports Cup.

Sean Skelly gave First Division leaders Town the ideal start with the lead goal after just three minutes.

But Dundalk were level on 22 minutes when 19-year-old Shanahan followed up to shoot home the rebound after keeper Paul Hunt could only parry a shot from Michael Rafter.

Shanahan then won it eight minutes after the break, collecting Stephen McDonnell’s pass to shoot past Hunt.

Drogheda United beat Bohemians 4-3 on penalties at Hunky Dorys Park after a 1-1 draw.

Drogheda’s Tiarnan Mulvenna had cancelled out Ryan McEvoy’s 25th minute lead nine minutes before half-time with the remainder of the game failing to separate the sides.
