Kelly out as Rovers have doubts over two for Derry clash

Shamrock Rovers could take a huge step towards retaining their title with victory over Derry City at Tallaght Stadium tonight, kick-off 7pm.

The Hoops will be crowned champions with six points from their next two games, however, visitors Derry also have it all to play for knowing that a 100% return from their remaining four games would see the Candystripes snatch the title.

Rovers must plan without Dean Kelly who is recovering from injury, although the striker is back in training and should feature over the coming weeks.

Gary O’Neill is carrying a calf muscle injury and is a doubt for the Hoops, while Enda Stevens will be assessed ahead of the game after returning from international duty with the Ireland Under-21 squad.

Hoops boss Michael O’Neill said: “This is a huge game for us, for both sides really. A win in this fixture would give us a good cushion at the top of the league and that will be our aim going into the game.

“The lads did very well to get the win on Sunday and they will need to do the same against Derry.

“It’s sure to be a tight game, and we’ll need to work hard. But the players are very much up for that and are looking forward to the game.”

O’Neill added: “It’ll be important to have a good crowd ahead of us on the night and that the crowd get behind the team for the full 90 minutes. We have to use the benefit of this game being in Tallaght.”

City travel to Dublin with doubts over Eddie McCallion and Owen Morrison who are both struggling with calf injuries.

Ryan McBride is fit again after recovering from a groin strain and should be included in the squad.

Stephen Kenny’s side will face, Galway United, St Patrick's Athletics and Bohemians in their remaining games, while Rovers take on UCD before finishing the campaign with a home fixture against Galway.
