Rovers stage comeback against Galway
Galway United 2 Shamrock Rovers 3
Shamrock Rovers had to come from behind to beat bottom of the table Galway United in a thriller at Terryland Park.
The win moves champions Rovers level on points with leaders Derry City, who have a better goal difference, though Michael O'Neill's Hoops have a game in hand.
Though Rovers made five changes to the side that drew 1-1 with FK Partizan last Thursday they had the ideal start with midfielder Ronan Finn shooting them ahead after 16 minutes.
But Galway hit back to level on 33 minutes when substitute Mikey Gilmore shot past Ryan Thompson.
Galway then stunned Rovers to take the lead within a minute of the restart as defender Eric Browne got his head to a Stephen Walsh corner.
Rovers responded to level six minutes later as Craig Sives flicked a long throw past keeper Conor Winn.
Striker Ciaran Kilduff got what proved the winner on 57 minutes, sliding the ball home from Karl Sheppard’s header across goal.
Man of the match Winn then rescued Galway from a hiding with a string of top quality saves, while Sives headed against the bar and Eric Holland cleared off the line from Gary Twigg in the final minute.
