The Zambian substitute swept home to secure a famous win over the 2008 UEFA Cup winners, who had gone ahead through Nicolas Lombaerts on 20 and looked confident of taking a lead back home for the second leg.

But a cool finish from Senad Lulic one minute into the second half shattered Zenit’s hopes and with Young Boys pressing, the visitors had Vladimir Bystrov sent off in the 69th minute for a second bookable offence.

Spartak Moscow were also in Switzerland and they fared better as Valeriy Karpin’s side stormed back from a 2-0 half-time deficit to win 3-2 against 10-man Basle.

Zhano Ananidze grabbed the winner deep into stoppage time after Dmitri Kombarov and Artem Dzjuba had cancelled out goals from Alexander Frei and Marco Streller and Basle’s Xherdan Shaqiri had been sent off.

CSKA Moscow were also winners, with Tomas Necid’s early goal securing a 1-0 win at PAOK Salonika. But Rubin Kazan were stunned at home by Dutch champions FC Twente, who coasted to a 2-0 win.

Kenny Dalglish’s return to European football did not provide the fairytale he had been hoping for as Liverpool toiled for a galless draw in Prague against Sparta, who had the best chances to win a poor game.

Meanwhile Walter Smith’s Rangers also have it all to do after Matias Fernandez struck a minute from time to grab a 1-1 draw for Sporting Lisbon at Ibrox, after Steven Whittaker’s 66th-minute opener.

Mounir El Hamdaoui’s 68th-minute effort rounded off a 3-0 away win for Ajax against at Belgian Pro League leaders Anderlecht, with Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen also scoring.

Benfica came from behind to beat Stuttgart 2-1 in a tight game in Portugal. Martin Harnik gave the German side the half-time advantage but late goals from Oscar Cardozo and Franco Jara turned the tie Benfica’s way.

Porto were 2-1 winners at Sevilla thanks to Freddy Guarin’s late strike, while two goals in the last 10 minutes earned PSV a vital 2-2 draw at Lille.

Andrei Shevchenko scored in Dynamo Kiev’s 4-1 win over Besiktas in Turkey while Sidney Sam hit two in injury time to give Bayer Leverkusen a 4-0 win over Metalist in the Ukraine.

Peguy Luyindula’s 89th-minute equaliser earned Paris St Germain a 2-2 draw at BATE Borisov, Lech Poznan nudged past Sporting Braga 1-0 while the tie between Napoli and Villarreal ended goalless.
