More hurt for Hargreaves

Owen Hargreaves was forced to abort his first start for Manchester United for more than two years after just six minutes of today’s Barclays Premier League game against Wolves.

England midfielder Hargreaves limped off in what was his latest attempt at a comeback from the nightmare knee problems which have blighted his Old Trafford career.

United also struggled to break down Wolves – who gave as good as they got – but opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time when Park Ji-sung slotted hom Darren Fletcher’s defence-splitting pass.

Asamoah Gyan took just nine minutes to mark his full Premier League debut with a goal as Sunderland also held a 1-0 interval advantage over Stoke.

Gyan pounced on the rebound after Nedum Onuoha’s shot was saved.

Black Cats boss Steve Bruce must have wished he had awarded Gyan penalty-taking duties as well after seeing Steed Malbranque’s weak effort saved by Asmir Begovic.

Kenwyne Jones also went close to marking his return to the Stadium of Light with an equaliser.

Aston Villa secured a 1-0 interval lead at Fulham thanks to Marc Albrighton’s superb strike four minutes before half-time, the midfielder cutting inside and finding the bottom corner of the net.

Both sides missed further good chances to add to the scoreline.

Neil Eardley celebrated his 22nd birthday with a brilliant free-kick to give Blackpool a 10th-minute lead against Everton.

But Tim Cahill levelled just three minutes later with a powerful header from Ayegbeni Yakubu’s cross and it stayed 1-1 until half-time.

Ben Foster’s wonderful save ensured it was goalless at St Andrews between Birmingham and West Ham, the goalkeeper tipping Carlton Cole’s volley against the post.

Blackburn and Wigan also drew a blank at Ewood Park, although Charles N’Zogbia did see a goal chalked off for the visitors.

In the lunchtime kick-off, Bolton stopped Champions League heroes Tottenham in their tracks after surviving a late scare at the Reebok Stadium.

The home side raced into a 3-0 lead thanks to two goals from Kevin Davies, one from the penalty spot, and Gretar Steinsson.

But Spurs, conquerors of Inter Milan in the Champions League in midweek, hit back with Alan Hutton and substitute Roman Pavlyuchenko scoring in the last 11 minutes only for Martin Petrov to step off the bench and seal Bolton’s victory in stoppage time.
