Nolan hat-trick sees Newcastle romp to five-goal win

Kevin Nolan turned in a captain’s display as he plundered a hat-trick to help Newcastle to a 5-1 demolition of Sunderland.

Former Magpie Titus Bramble was sent off for an ugly 53rd-minute challenge on Andy Carroll, but the Black Cats were already trailing 3-0 to Nolan’s double on 26 and 34 minutes and Shola Ameobi’s penalty in first-half injury time.

Ameobi doubled his tally 20 minutes from time and Nolan completed his treble five minutes later to seal a famous victory despite Darren Bent’s last-minute consolation.

Turner followed Malbranque, Onuoha, Bardsley and Cattermole into the book for a crude 73rd-minute challenge on Carroll as the striker broke free once again.

Nolan completed his hat-trick – the first in the fixture since Peter Beardsley’s in 1985 – with 15 minutes remaining when he met Ameobi’s flick-on two yards out and gleefully headed home.

Carroll was running riot and Onuoha, who had already been booked, brought him down on the edge of the area with 10 minutes remaining, although Mr Dowd did not punish him further.

Krul had to pluck Gyan’s 88th-minute snapshot out of the air, but Bent stabbed Gyan’s knock-down past Krul at the death to provide his side with some consolation.
