Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll was today fined £1,000 (€1,100) after admitting assaulting a man in a nightclub.

The 21-year-old pleaded guilty to common assault and was ordered to pay an additional £2,500 (€2,800) compensation at Newcastle Crown Court.

The victim suffered a head injury which required hospital treatment following the incident in the city’s Blu Bambu club on December 7 last year.

Carroll had earlier denied assault occasioning actual bodily harm – a charge which was dropped when he pleaded guilty to the lesser offence.

The England Under-21 international is a regular in Newcastle United’s first team and scored the winning goal in Saturday’s Premier League victory over West Ham.
