Teenager signs Sunderland deal

Teenage midfielder Jordan Henderson has signed a new deal which will keep him at Sunderland until 2013.

The 19-year-old, who has broken into the first team this season and made nine senior appearances, has been rewarded with a long-term contract.

Sunderland-born Henderson emerged from the club’s academy to be handed a senior debut at Chelsea in November last year under Roy Keane before honing his skills during a loan spell at Coventry.

New boss Steve Bruce swiftly drafted him back into the first team squad during pre-season and he has played some part in all but one of the club’s 10 games to date, scoring his first goal in the 2-0 Carling Cup victory over Birmingham on September 22.
