Injury-hit Derry need to 'get back on track'

Derry City entertain league leaders Shamrock Rovers in tonight’s Premier Division clash at the Brandywell, kick-off 7.45pm.

City have a lot of injuries ahead of the Rovers game as Clive Delaney (back), Stephen Gray (ankle), Peter Hutton (groin), Ger O'Brien (ankle), Sammy Morrow (ankle), Tommy Stewart (knee) and Mark Farren (illness) are all ruled out of contention.

City boss Stephen Kenny said: "We played some very good football at Turner’s Cross in our recent game with Cork. The penalty against us was an incredibly poor decision by the referee and it altered the game.

“We have a lot of injuries at the minute and yet we must re-group and get ourselves back on track and put in a strong performance against a Rovers side that have been on a very good run of late."

Rovers have doubts about the fitness of both Ian Bermingham and Gary Twigg, and both will face late fitness tests, while Pat Sullivan misses out through suspension.

Hoops boss Michael O’Neill said: “Ian’s been missing for a while so it would be good to have him back. As for Twiggy, everyone knows how long a season he’s had – but we’re hoping he’ll be available.

“I was delighted with a hard fought but deserved win over Bohemians. The work rate and desire of our players was first class – particularly at this stage of the season.

“While not wanting to single out any individuals, we had big performances from Shane Robinson, Stephen Rice, Aidan Price and Craig Sives. They were tremendous.

“We expect a very tough game at the Brandywell. Although it was 0-0 when we played there earlier in the season, it was an excellent game of football.

“We have been excellent away from home all season – with only one defeat, early on at Bohemians - so we’ll approach the game in a confident manner, as is always the case.

“But we are under no illusions about the task we’re facing. We know how difficult it will be for us. The players are enjoying the position they are in and are looking forward to the game.”
