IFA's Nelson 'excited' by task ahead

New IFA chief executive Patrick Nelson believes there is good cause for optimism in Northern Ireland.

After starting his role yesterday, Nelson said: “It is very exciting as we have a huge amount to do here.

“There is work going on all day, every day. We have a strategy that needs to be reviewed and refreshed.

“There are a number of important things going on and pulling in a sponsor like Carling during a recession is great news for football here.”

Nelson is due to attend his first international match at Windsor Park on August 12 when Northern Ireland face Israel in a friendly.

The ramshackle stadium’s capacity is limited to around 14,000 but plans to build a new complex in or around Belfast have failed to materialise.

The site of former Maze prison was proposed only to be eventually rejected and it means the debate continues to rage, leaving Nelson keen to find a solution.

He said: “The most important priority is to take forward, in whatever way is appropriate, the national stadium project.

“It is one that has been around for a while and there are options we need to look at. We need to push the project forward and bring in all the stakeholders and make sure we make the right decision for football in Northern Ireland.”

Nelson arrived from English League Two side Macclesfield where he held a similar position and he said: “The most important thing I learned was I had to keep the place on an even keel from a financial perspective.

“I know things are slightly different in a national association but it is important to use all your pounds as wisely as possible.”
