Rangers seeking style and substance

Walter Smith insists Rangers have not abandoned entertainment value in their quest to win the title despite serving up scrappy victories over St Mirren and Falkirk.

The Ibrox side ground out a hard-fought 2-1 win against Saints last night just three days after producing an uninspiring narrow victory at the Falkirk Stadium.

Those results have been enough to keep Rangers within touching distance of rivals Celtic at the summit of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League who, in contrast, have clocked up seven goals in their last two outings.

But Smith claims it is not a case of forgetting about performances completely as Rangers bid to put points on the board and close the three-point gap between themselves and their Old Firm rivals.

“I felt we played very well in the first half of the game against St Mirren so I wouldn’t say that,” he said.

“We have had two awkward games. Falkirk and St Mirren are both fighting relegation, both were on their own grounds and they are not going to make it easy for you.

“So I’m delighted that we have managed to win both those games.”
