Financial services company Prudential have confirmed they are in talks with Manchester United about becoming the club‘s new shirt sponsor.
American International Group (AIG) confirmed in January they would not be renewing their current deal beyond the 2009-10 campaign – although the logo is set to be retained for next season.
Edward Brewster, head of group media relations at Prudential, told The Sport Briefing: “We can confirm we have been approached by Manchester United. We are one of several [companies], we believe, to have been [talking to Manchester United].”
Brewster added that, from Prudential‘s viewpoint, there was no timeline on a potential deal.
The Tata Group, an India-based car manufacturer linked to a possible agreement, recently confirmed they do “not have any intention of sponsoring any football club at this point of time”. Other names to have been touted as potential replacements for AIG include AirAsia, Saudi Telecom and Sahara.
AIG are in the third of a four-year deal worth a total of £56.5m (€62.8m) with the Barclays Premier League and UEFA Champions League holders.
However, the insurance and financial services group has been the subject of a US taxpayer bailout after incurring huge losses during the global economic downturn.
