Burley: Victory would be career high

George Burley admits victory in the Amsterdam Arena tonight would represent the pinnacle of his managerial career.

The Scotland boss was named Premier League manager of the year in 2001 after guiding Ipswich to fifth place after bringing the East Anglian side up from the Championship the season previously, and he is also credited with revitalising Derby and Southampton.

However, the former Hearts boss insists an unlikely World Cup qualifying win over the Group Nine leaders Holland, who have won their first three qualifying games, would top anything he has achieved as a manager.

“This will be the biggest achievement of my career,” said Burley. “But we believe we can do it, even though we know we are up against a tremendous side.

“We are not daft, we are realists, they will have a lot of possession and we have to shut them down and try to impose ourselves when we can.

“If we do that, I am confident we can nick a point, maybe more.”
