Jaaskelainen boost for Bolton

Bolton have received a huge pre-season boost after highly-rated goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen joined Ricardo Gardner in committing his future to the club.

The Finland number one was linked with a move away from the Reebok Stadium last season when he stalled over agreeing a new deal.

Jaaskelainen, 33, has been one of the Premier League’s most consistent keepers since arriving from VPS in 1997 and Wanderers manager Gary Megson will be delighted to have staved off his many admirers with a four-year contract.

Bolton endured a troubled campaign last year and were candidates for the drop for much of the season.

Relegation would almost certainly seen the Finn leave, but he is now set to end his career with the club he has made nearly 350 appearances for.

Martin O’Neill’s Aston Villa had appeared to move into pole position for his signature but will now have to look elsewhere to strengthen their ranks.

Gardner, meanwhile, has been with the club for a decade and has earned a three-year extension despite suffering with injury problems.

The Jamaican can play at full-back and in midfield and last appeared for Wanderers in the 0-0 draw at home to Manchester City on March 22 after picking up a knock to the rib.
