Butcher set for Scotland decision

Terry Butcher will decide before the end of the week whether to take up a role as assistant to Scotland boss George Burley.

The former England captain held constructive talks with Burley at Hampden yesterday which could lead to the pair working together.

Butcher has been offered a part-time role, as has Celtic defender Steven Pressley, as Burley looks to assemble his staff.

"I had a good chat with George and now I'll go away and speak to my family," Butcher said.

"There was nothing signed but, hopefully, something can be sorted out within 48 hours.

"All the people I've talked to have told me that George has gone for the football person in me - not the nationality."

Butcher has plenty of experience of the Scottish game, having been captain of Rangers and manager of Motherwell.

The part-time role would allow him to maintain other interests, such as his role as a media pundit.

The same applies to 34-year-old Pressley who would be determined to combine playing duties with the Scotland role.

Pressley said: "This move doesn't affect my ambitions as a player at all. I could continue playing and fully intend doing so."
