Lampard: We're not out for revenge
Chelsea's England midfielder Frank Lampard insists revenge will be the last thing on their minds if they meet Liverpool in the semi-final of the Champions League.
Chelsea's stunning win over Valencia has set up the prospect of a repeat of their controversial clash at the same stage of the competition two years ago.
Liverpool are expected to overcome PSV Eindhoven after chalking up a 3-0 first leg lead and that will provide Chelsea with the opportunity to finally get even with the Merseysiders.
Coach Jose Mourinho still insists that Liverpool's goal should never have been allowed because Luis Garcia's effort did not cross the line, despite the widespread belief that had the referee not played advantage, Chelsea would have conceded a penalty and had goalkeeper Petr Cech sent off.
Now with a rematch on the cards, Lampard warns there should be no talk of revenge because it could all backfire on them.
Lampard declared: "Revenge is a silly thing to take into games because then you are not concentrating as you should be. What happened before doesn't matter. All that matters is those two legs, winning and getting to the final.
"What matters is the history we make now. This season is about trying to win the Champions League and it will be the same for Liverpool - they won't be thinking about what happened two years ago - they will be thinking about now."
Lampard always thought Chelsea would overcome Valencia even though a first-half goal from Fernando Morientes put the Spanish side 2-1 in front on aggregate.
But a 52nd-minute equaliser from Andriy Shevchenko and a last-minute winner from Michael Essien handed Chelsea a sensational victory at the Mestalla - the first English club to win there for 40 years.
Lampard added: "A Champions League semi-final is always a difficult game. We have a good squad, with very good players and I think you saw against Valencia that one of our strengths is fighting until the end.
"As the game went on we got stronger and stronger and we have to continue that. We are in a good moment in the league in England. We are playing very well and have got a lot of wins. Now we are in the semi-final of the Champions League and we have to keep on getting better.
"Every game for us now is huge and we cannot afford to lose one. We are either playing in a cup competition or in our league and we have to close the gap on Manchester United.
"The atmosphere was very god at the Mestalla, so when you come through and win these sort of games it is the best feeling you can have.
"We had team spirit, quality and character. It is a very difficult place to come and to be a goal down at half-time, we had to show everything and we did that - we dominated in the second half.
"The manager didn't say huge amounts at half-time, he told us to carry on and to attack. We felt the game was going to open up a little bit more. There was no shouting or hollering.
"I don't think we played particularly bad in the first half. We were waiting for our time. He just wanted us to step it up a little bit and we all reacted very well.
"It was a great winning goal. Michael has played in many positions this season but wherever he plays, he is fantastic.
"He's been out for a few weeks but he arrives in the last minute and scores the goal but Valencia was all about the team and the performance - it was spot on.
"I did think it was drifting towards extra-time because even though we were the stronger team in the second half, you realise the time is going.
"We were all a bit tired but you prepare yourself mentally for it. We carried on attacking and I felt there was only one team going to win it and when we got the goal it was game over.
"I don't believe in destiny to be honest. No matter who you beat, if you don't perform against Liverpool, if it is Liverpool, then you are out."
Chelsea now face Blackburn in the FA Cup semi-final at Old Trafford on Sunday and Lampard claims there is no chance them becoming complacent following the euphoria of their win over Valencia
Lampard added: "We cannot relax going into the Blackburn game - that would be naive and stupid. We have to pay ultimate respect to them for the season they are having and the players they have got. We have to be on our guard.
"Mark Hughes has done very well and he is a very good manager. He will be, at some time the future, a top, top, manager. Whether that will be at Blackburn or not, I don't know.
"But he has done a fantastic job there. I don't know him particularly well but I like his character and you can see he is a strong man. People at Chelsea have a lot of good things to say about him."
