UCD and Shamrock Rovers had to settle for a point apiece in a dour contest at Belfield as their respective seasons began with a whimper.

Rovers' striker Gerard Rowe came closest to scoring when rattling the UCD crossbar on 37 minutes before the Students sprung to life to waste two chances before the interval.

Conor Sammon brought a good stop out of Rovers' keeper Barry Murphy before UCD skipper Tony McDonnell flashed a header form Conan Byrne's corner just wide.
