Update on Becks injury due later today
David Beckham should find out later today how serious his knee injury is after limping out of yesterday’s league match against Getafe.
Beckham has been undergoing tests at the club’s Valdebebas training ground, which will determine the extent of the problem and how long the midfielder is likely to be sidelined.
The initial diagnosis is that Beckham has damaged the internal lateral ligament in his right knee.
Madrid coach Fabio Capello is already resigned to being without the former England captain for Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Bayern Munich, while Beckham must also be a doubt for next weekend’s clash at Barcelona.
If the injury is serious, then Beckham would also miss a charity game against Manchester United at Old Trafford on March 13.
The 31-year-old had been selected in the European All-Star XI who will play United in a jubilee match being staged to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the European Common Market, as well as United’s 50 years of European competition.
An injury of any severity would also rule out any chance of a possible recall to the England squad for next month’s Euro 2008 qualifying double-header against Israel and Andorra.
Beckham suffered the injury midway through the second half of the Getafe match, after attempting a cross and then running into the advertising hoardings behind the goal.
He stayed on the pitch for a while, seemingly in a bid to run the injury off but, with no apparent improvement, he was substituted with Antonio Cassano taking his place.
Beckham, who was back in the Madrid starting line-up following suspension, had earlier hit the crossbar and was also involved in Madrid’s equaliser in the 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu.
