Wigan are to sign Sweden defender Andreas Granqvist on a loan deal to the end of the season.

Granqvist is due in Wigan today to put pen to paper on a move that could be made permanent in the summer.

The 21-year-old becomes the second Helsingborgs player to recently leave the club for the Premiership following Henrik Larsson’s loan move to Manchester United.

Granqvist, who joins another Swede at the JJB Stadium in striker Andreas Johansson, said: “This is a big step for me. I’m joining the best league in the world and a club I think suits me very well.”

Because of the move, Granqvist has withdrawn from Sweden’s planned trip to South America next month.
