Rangers captain Barry Ferguson apologised to his team-mates for his glaring miss in the first half of the Old Firm derby at Ibrox on Sunday.

In the 17th minute, with the match goalless, the 28-year-old beat the Hoops’ offside trap and found himself with only Parkhead keeper Artur Boruc to beat.

But Ferguson volleyed high over the bar to the delight of the the Celtic fans behind the Broomloan Road goal.

It was to prove the best chance of an enthralling game that ended 1-1, Thomas Gravesen’s opener for the visitors before the break cancelled out by a late equaliser by Light Blues’ defender Brahim Hemdani.

The Scotland midfielder told the Scottish Sun: “I got a great touch to control the ball on my chest but then I took the shot too high.

“I know that I should have let the ball drop a little, I know I should have scored and I am so disappointed. I hold my hands up to it because it was a bad miss and I can’t hide from that.

“I said sorry to the boys at half-time but you have to pick yourself up and get on with it when that happens to you and that’s what I did.”
