Charlton survived a grandstand finish to the first half by Manchester United at The Valley where, even without suspended Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes, the Old Trafford side looked a potent threat.

Cristiano Ronaldo, booed throughout the opening 45 minutes by Charlton’s fans, struck the crossbar three minutes before the break after Ryan Giggs, who also forced Scott Carson into a fine save, had hit a post with a free-kick.

And Park Ji-Sung also missed a decent chance after United came alive after a damp start.
