Verbeek appointed South Korea boss

Dutchman Pim Verbeek has been named South Korea coach after Dick Advocaat announced his intention to step down from the post.

Verbeek worked as assistant to both Advocaat and Guus Hiddink at the last two World Cups with the Koreans, helping the team to the semi-finals of the 2002 competition on home soil.

The Koreans were eliminated from this year’s competition in the group phase after a 2-0 loss to Switzerland in their final game saw the Swiss and France advance to the knockout phase.

“We appointed Verbeek, senior assistant coach of the Korean national football team, as successor to Dick Advocaat,” said Lee Young Moo, chairman of the technical committee of the Korean Football Association.

“Verbeek is known for his great enthusiasm and affection for South Korea, as well as his deep knowledge of Korean football and its players. He is also widely trusted by the Korean players.”
