No deal imminent with Campbell - Fenerbahce
Fenerbahce insist no deal is imminent after being linked with a move for Arsenal’s England defender Sol Campbell.
The 31-year-old England centre-back was reported to have been offered a three-year deal.
Campbell’s stock has fallen considerably in recent months – he walked out of February’s match against West Ham at Highbury at half-time and then went missing for several days – after a difficult season coping with injury and off-field problems.
He scored, however, in the Champions League final and has three years to run on a deal he only signed last year with Arsenal.
There have been claims of a meeting between Fenerbahce vice-president Mahmut Uslu and Campbell’s agent Sky Andrew, but the Turkish giants maintain that, even if they were to be interested, no deal was likely to be settled soon.
In a curt statement, Fenerbahce declared: “Rumours that we have agreed all terms with Arsenal FC’s Sol Campbell are untrue.
“Claims that the player concerned will be arriving in Turkey to complete the deal do not reflect the truth.”
It was not an outright dismissal of the story, and leaves the door open for Fenerbahce to attempt to sign Campbell after the World Cup, but the defender was training with England today.
Campbell controversially joined Arsenal from rivals Tottenham on a free transfer in 2001 after allowing his contract to run down at White Hart Lane.
