England striker Wayne Rooney has been carried off on a stretcher during Manchester United’s clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge – just 41 days before the World Cup.

The 20-year-old, who is expected to lead England’s attack during the World Cup this summer, appeared to pick up a foot injury after a tackle by Chelsea full-back Paulo Ferreira.

Rooney, whose side were losing 3-0 when he was carried off, was injured during the European Championship quarter-final against Portugal in 2004 which severely affected England’s chances of victory.
