Irish striker Doyle honoured with PFA award
Irish striker Kevin Doyle has completed a remarkable year by being named in the 2006 Professional Footballers’ Association Football League Championship Team of the Year.
The 22-year-old was playing for Cork City this time last year before moving to the Madejski Stadium in the summer and helping them storm to the Championship title.
He has scored 19 goals, helping Reading pass the 100-point barrier and reach the Barclays Premiership under the management of Steve Coppell.
Doyle has also earned his first Republic of Ireland cap this season.
Predictably, Reading provide the most representatives in the team of the year, which was voted for by fellow professionals.
Goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, defenders Ibrahima Sonko and Nicky Shorey, and midfielder Steve Sidwell were also included.
Irish international Gary Kelly of Leeds was also honoured by being named in the Championship team of the season.
The open race for the League One title is reflected by the range of players in the divisional side, who have Swansea’s Lee Trundle as one of their two strikers.
In League Two, promotion-chasing Wycombe have three players in the XI, with Danny Senda, Roger Johnson and Kevin Betsy included.
