French defender Jean-Alain Boumsong was sent off as Newcastle crashed to their first home defeat under Glenn Roeder at the hands of in-form Liverpool.

The visitors led 2-0 at St James’ Park inside 35 minutes after Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard had struck, but Shola Ameobi pulled one back four minutes before the break.

However, Boumsong was dismissed for a foul on Crouch and Djibril Cisse converted the resulting penalty as the Reds made the most of their numerical advantage.
