Greening welcomes Ehiogu addition
Jonathan Greening believes his former Middlesbrough team-mate Ugo Ehiogu will be “a great addition” to the West Brom squad after he was given the all clear to move to the Hawthorns.
Ehiogu’s switch to the club where he started his career looked to have collapsed despite the player agreeing personal terms and undergoing a medical.
The 33-year-old appeared to be needed as cover for Boro captain Gareth Southgate, whom it was thought would be out of action for three months because of an ankle problem.
But the injury is not as serious as first anticipated and now Ehiogu has been given the green light to press ahead with his switch to West Brom.
Baggies boss Bryan Robson will hope for the deal to go through in time for Ehiogu to make his debut against Wigan on Sunday, particularly with Neil Clement sidelined with a fractured cheekbone.
Greening said: “I think Ugo will be a great addition to the squad. He’s still got a lot of football left in him and he’s a very clever player.
“He has the experience and I think he’d do really well for us. He asked me a few things and I just told him what a great place it was at Albion.”
Greening knows Albion have to improve on their dismal showing against a half- strength Reading in the FA Cup if they are to earn any tangible reward at the JJB Stadium and move clear of relegation trouble.
He said: “The gaffer was upset we didn’t perform too well and hopefully we can put that right on Sunday. He’s calm most of the time but he definitely wasn’t happy after the Reading game.
“We need to put it right because we all feel we let him down. We’ve got some really important games coming up where we need to get victories.
“But we know we will need to play well at Wigan if we are to get anything. What they have achieved so far this season is tremendous.”
Greening, who scored his only Albion goal against Wigan earlier in the season, added: “We’ve got some winnable games in January and February and, if we can play like we did in the second half of last season, then we should be okay.
“It is important we start picking up results away from home. We all know we need to play better and we need to pull together if we are to move away from the bottom three.”
