Scholes wins plaudits

Alex Ferguson and Ruud van Nistelrooy were united in their praise of Paul Scholes after the Manchester United midfielder ended his scoring drought in the 3-0 win over Portsmouth.

Van Nistelrooy, who also scored at Old Trafford, described Paul Scholes as the side’s “main player” after their victory.

Scholes, Wayne Rooney and Van Nistelrooy were all on target as the Red Devils sauntered home, ending an emotional week in perfect fashion following the death of club legend George Best.

“I’m delighted for Scholes, we know he’s the main player, our playmaker and he works hard and deserved it,” Van Nistelrooy told Sky Sports Premiership Plus.

“Overall it was a great performance and something to build on. We had the opportunities to score a couple which we did. Portsmouth hung in there and fought for the lives which made it a difficult game.”

Manager Ferguson said: “It was a convincing performance, we really worked our socks off and showed great determination. I’m pleased with the scoreline. We got the start we wanted in terms of tempo but then we maybe over-played but got a second win.”

Regarding Scholes’ goal, Ferguson said: “I’m delighted and I’m sure everyone in the ground is too. Knowing Paul, what a good goalscorer he is, he can start adding to his tally now.”

Portsmouth caretaker boss Joe Jordan said: “I’m disappointed with the result, obviously we are desperate for points. At 1-0 we were always in with a chance and tried to change it a bit but it didn’t work and the second goal killed us.”

Jordan also believes the club must invest in new players in January if they hope to avoid relegation.

“I think we’ll need to act, to be honest. If I’m still in charge coming into next week I might be able to talk to the chairman about my thoughts on it,” Jordan told Sky Sports’ Prem Plus.
